In addition, excavations have proved that the popularity of any particular object cannot be estimated from the numbers that have survived intact.<\/p>\n<p>But the mass of contemporary documentation can provide an unbiased record from which to reconstruct and explore the world of trading and changing fashion, a world of vast fortunes and frequent bankruptcies. This business is altogether shopkeeping, and some of them carry on a very considerable trade, joining white flint glass, fine earthenware and stoneware, as well as teas, with their china ware.
